^Allanon makes his way to the edge of the lake, where he stands and waits. Slowly, he raises his
^arms to the sky and the lake begins to churn in deep dissatisfaction. The valley shudders
^heavily, as if some form of hidden, sleeping life had been awakened. The water boils and sprays
^into the air. The sound of low moaning, imprisoned souls disturbed from their sleep, can be
^heard. A whirlpool forms and gives rise to the shroud of an old man. Allanon turns to the Shade
^before him and they seem to converse. But it only lasts a few brief moments and ends when the
^apparition points with it's skeletal arm at the onlookers. Shea feels as if he is touched by death
^itself. The Shade bids farewell to Allanon and sinks into the lake. Shortly after the valley is all
^quiet, as if nothing happened.

^Allanon collapses when the Shade leaves him, and the others rush to his rescue, ignoring his
^earlier warning. Allanon wakes up and tells them he'll be alright.
^FLICK: "Who was that creature?"
^ALLANON: "A lost soul who doomed himself to an existence of half-life that may not end for
^all eternity. It was the Shade of Bremen, the Druid that fought against the Warlock Lord 500
^years ago in the Second War of the Races. I spoke to him about the Sword of Shannara, of our
^trip to Paranor, and of the destiny of this company. He promised that soon we
^while behold the Sword of Shannara. But he also foresaw that one member of our company
^would not reach the far side of the Dragon's Teeth. Yet he will be the first to lay hands upon the
^sacred blade..."
^Allanon turns and directs this towards Shea, Flick, Durin, and Dayle:
^ALLANON: "Upon making the last part of the prophesy, the shade pointed to the four of you
^standing at the edge of the valley. One of you will not reach Paranor!"

^were interred. All others who entered were never seen again. In time, the cult died out, but the
^evil instilled in the Hall of Kings continued to exist, blindly to serve the priests whose bones had
^years before returned to the earth. Few men have ever passed...
^I have been through the Hall of Kings- I alone from this age, and now you. I am a Druid, the last
^to walk this earth. Like Bremen, like Brona before him, I have studied the black arts, and I am a
^sorcerer. I do not possess the power of the Dark Lord- but I can get us safely through these
^caverns to the other side of the Dragon's Teeth...
^Beyond this entrance, there are a number of passages and chambers, a maze to one who does
^not know the way. Soon after we enter, we will reach the tunnel of the Sphinxes, giant statues
^carved as half man, half beast. If you look into their eyes, you will be turned to stone instantly.
^So you must be blindfolded. In addition you will be roped together and will proceed after me.
^You must concentrate on me, think only of me, for their will, their mental command, is strong
^enough to force you to tear off the blindfolds and gaze into their eyes."

^they can. Tremor after tremor rocks the earth, but one is considerably stronger and Shea loses
^his footings and falls a little bit before grasping on to a ledge.

^ALLANON: "Hold on, Shea! I'll get a rope. Don't move an inch!"

^A second tremor shakes the mountain, finishing Shea off for good. He falls down into the river
^below with crushing force. Allanon watches his body bob to the surface and be carried
^downstream.

^of the Hall of Kings. But all of that for nothing due to a fluke of nature. Balinor knew they now
^faced two grim options. Either abandon the quest and turn back in an effort to reach their
^homelands and perhaps locate Shea, or they must continue on to Paranor and seize the Sword
^of Shannara without the courageous Valeman.
^ALLANON: "It may be that we are beaten, but to turn back would be to dishonor ourselves in
^our own eyes as much as in the eyes of those who depend on us. If we are to be defeated by the
^evil in the Northland, by things born of the spirit world, then we must turn and face it. We cannot
^back away and hope for some elusive miracle. If death comes, it should find us with weapons
^drawn and the Sword of Shannara in our hands!"
^MENION: "What about Shea?"
^ALLANON: "I cannot guess any better than you. He was washed out to the plains by the
^mountain river. Perhaps he lives, perhaps not, but we can do nothing for him now."
^MENION: "What you are proposing is that we forget him and go after the Sword- a useless
^piece of metal without the rightful bearer!"
^Allanon and Menion lose their tempers and begin screaming at each other. Things are about to
^get ugly...

^right now because Shea is my brother, perhaps not by blood or race, but by stronger bonds still.
^If you will not use your power to find out where he is and what has happened to him, then I will
^go with Menion and search until Shea is found."
^BALINOR: "He is right, Allanon. These two have a right know if there is any chance for Shea. I
^know the consequences, but is a chance I say we must take."
^Allanon studies the faces of everyone around him, finding the two Elves in the agreement but the
^taciturn Dwarf revealing nothing.
^ALLANON: "The choice is yours. I will do as you ask. Stand back and do not speak to me or
^approach me until I tell you."

^passes."
^FLICK: "We cannot desert him!"
^ALLANON: "You have forgotten the prophecy. The last part promised that one of us would not
^see the other side of the Dragon's Teeth, but that he would be first to place hands on the Sword
^of Shannara. That we now know to be Shea. Fate will bring us together. Onward to Paranor!"
